The Three-Day Affair

The Book Ends - Reviews Posted on February 25, 2013 by Karen ApplebyMarch 13, 2013

by Michael Kardos

Will, Jeffrey, and Nolan have been friends since their undergrad days at Princeton. Now, nine years after graduation, Will is a failed musician still reeling from the death of a band mate. Jeffrey got lucky and then rich from the dot-com boom, and Nolan is a state senator with national aspirations. Their friendships have bent without breaking for years, until one shocking event changes everything.
One night on a drive, they make a routine stop at a convenience store. Moments after entering the store, a manic Jeffrey emerges, dragging a young woman with him. He shoves her into Will’s car and shouts a single word: “Drive!” Shaken and confused, Will obeys.
Suddenly these three men find themselves completely out of their element, holding a frightened young girl hostage without the slightest idea of what to do next. They’re already guilty of kidnapping and robbery; it’s only a matter of time before they find out what else they might be guilty of. For these three friends, three days will decide their fate–between freedom and prison, innocence and guilt . . . and life and death.
The Three-Day Affair marks the emergence of an electrifying new voice in crime fiction.
My Thoughts…

I must admit when I first started reading this I began to think it pretty lame and really didn’t want to finish.  But, as I progressed and things started falling together it became quite interesting in some respects.  In other respects I would give The Three Day Affair three stars just because, realistically, I don’t know of too many people that would actually go through with the plan of action portrayed in this novel, the kidnapping, robbery-gone-bad scenario all for financial gain, but you never know what people will do for money.  It may be better left for a made-for-TV movie.  At three stars it was still somewhat entertaining.

Political Suicide

The Book Ends - Reviews Posted on January 28, 2013 by Karen ApplebyFebruary 15, 2013

by Michael Palmer

A massive cover-up gone awry

A prominent physician accused of murder

Uncovering the truth could put the entire country at risk

Dr. Gary McHugh, known around Washington, D.C. as the “society doc,” calls his longtime friend Dr. Lou Welcome in a state of panic, certain he is about to be arrested for murder. McHugh was found in an alcoholic blackout in his wrecked car after visiting a patient of his, the powerful Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, Elias Colston. Soon after McHugh leaves, Colston’s wife returns home to find her husband shot to death in their garage. McHugh has no recollection of committing the crime and no one who would possibly believe in his innocence, other than Lou. As more facts come to light, even Lou has serious doubts. But something about McHugh’s story nags at him and as he looks into matters, pieces of the puzzle don’t point to his friend’s guilt so definitively.

With the help of Sarah Cooper, an ambitious attorney with her own reasons for hating doctors, Lou finds himself at the center of a deadly, high-level conspiracy where the difference between right and wrong is a matter of interpretation, and the words “whatever it takes” have a chilling meaning. If Lou and Sarah don’t uncover the real reasons Colston is dead, they may not survive themselves, and the entire country could be at risk for attacks that could destroy the very fabric of national security.

Once again, bestselling author Michael Palmer proves that he is the king of suspense in this page-turning thriller set at the crossroads of politics, the military, and medical science.

My thoughts…

Michael Palmer knows how to write a story that draws you in from the very beginning.  Dr. Lou Welcome is called by his good friend to help keep him out of prison for a murder he’s been accused of and has no memory of because he was suffering from an alcoholic blackout.  In the process of the sleuthing investigation by Dr. Welcome things don’t seem quite right.  Michael Palmer writes an amazing plot that takes many twists and turns that will keep you wondering until the very last page.

I haven’t had the opportunity to read “Oath of Office” where Dr. Lou Welcome is introduced but I think it’s going on my to be read list very soon.

Utopia, Texas

The Book Ends - Reviews Posted on January 26, 2013 by Karen ApplebyJanuary 28, 2013

by Michael E. Glasscock III

UtopiaTexasWhat happens when men of principle become men of violence?

In the quiet town of Utopia, Texas, life is simple. Monty Kilpatrick does his duty as a local game warden, catching poachers, smoking too many cigarettes, and trying to keep his marriage afloat. Most days he thinks about the loss of his young son and how to not be tempted to stray from his vows by one of the local girls.

But just across the border in Mexico, drug cartel kingpin Juan Diaz is running his empire with an iron fist. Utopia is part of the cartel’s main trafficking routes, and when Monty arrests Diaz’s brother during what he thought was a routine traffic stop, the men’s paths cross. In a moment, the formerly peaceful Utopia becomes a war zone.

Set in cartel haciendas and the rugged Texas landscape and featuring plenty of guns, explosions, and helicopters, Utopia, Texas pits Monty and Juan against each other, both bound by the opposing set of laws they’ve chosen to follow. In order to save his town, his wife, and his pride, Monty must be ready to lose everything he holds true.

My thoughts…

Utopia, Texas was a fast paced and strikingly authentic… the twists and turns will keep you guessing what will happen next and you’ll never believe how it ends…  Glasscock III has it all – suspenseful plot, magnificent scenery, and a hero who is tough but truly connected to his family.

For those who enjoy reading books authored by C. J. Box and William Kent Krueger will definitely enjoy reading Utopia, Texas.  Don’t walk run to your computer and download this fantastic read to your kindle while it’s still 99 cents.  It’s a great bargain and it’s so good that the author may decide to increase the price soon.

Happy reading

The Lincoln Conspiracy

The Book Ends - Reviews Posted on November 5, 2012 by Karen ApplebyDecember 4, 2012

by Timothy L. O’Brien

From award-winning journalist Timothy L. O’Brien comes a gripping historical thriller that poses a provocative question: What if the plot to assassinate President Lincoln was wider and more sinister than we ever imagined?

In late spring of 1865, as America mourns the death of its leader, Washington, D.C., police detective Temple McFadden makes a startling discovery. Strapped to the body of a dead man at the B & O Railroad station are two diaries, two documents that together reveal the true depth of the Lincoln conspiracy. Securing the diaries will put Temple’s life in jeopardy—and will endanger the fragile peace of a nation still torn by war.

Temple’s quest to bring the conspirators to justice takes him on a perilous journey through the gas-lit streets of the Civil War–era capital, into bawdy houses and back alleys where ruthless enemies await him in every shadowed corner. Aided by an underground network of friends—and by his wife, Fiona, a nurse who possesses a formidable arsenal of medicinal potions—Temple must stay one step ahead of Lafayette Baker, head of the Union Army’s spy service. Along the way, he’ll run from or rely on Edwin Stanton, Lincoln’s fearsome secretary of war; the legendary Scottish spymaster Allan Pinkerton; abolitionist Sojourner Truth; the photographer Alexander Gardner; and many others.

Bristling with twists and building to a climax that will leave readers gasping, The Lincoln Conspiracy offers a riveting new account of what truly motivated the assassination of one of America’s most beloved presidents—and who participated in the plot to derail the train of liberty that Lincoln set in motion.

My take:

I wanted to like this book and did read it to the very end with some reservations along the way. I found that the characters were very hard to differentiate between, especially in the beginning. As the book progressed the characters were whittled down to the few manageable complex characters, this made it much easier to follow. Toward the end it finally felt like a mystery was forming and I looked forward to reaching the end of the book, but that turned out to be disappointing for me, maybe I expected too much. This would have been a great book if only the author had spent more time developing this mystery through history a little bit better based on the information gleaned from the two diaries Temple came to possess.

Edge of Black

The Book Ends - Reviews Posted on October 17, 2012 by Karen ApplebyDecember 4, 2012

[amazon_link id=”B0092MTGSE” target=”_blank” ]by J. T. Ellison[/amazon_link]

Description:

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides…

Dr. Samantha Owens is starting over: new city, new job, new man, new life. She’s trying to put some distance between herself and the devastating loss of her husband and children-but old hurts leave scars.

Before she’s even unpacked her office at Georgetown University’s forensic pathology department, she’s called to consult on a case that’s rocked the capital and the country. An unknown pathogen released into the Washington Metro has caused nationwide panic. Three people died-just three.

A miracle and a puzzle…

Amid the media frenzy and Homeland Security alarm bells, Sam painstakingly dissects the lives of those three victims and makes an unsettling conclusion. This is no textbook terrorist causing mayhem with broad strokes, but an artist wielding a much finer, more pointed instrument of destruction. An assassin, whose motive is deeply personal and far from understandable.

Xander Whitfield, a former Army Ranger and Sam’s new boyfriend, knows about seeing the world in shades of gray. About feeling compelled to do the wrong thing for the right reasons. Only his disturbing kinship with a killer can lead Sam to the truth…and once more into the line of fire.

What I thought…

The description says it all…

This is my second book by J. T. Ellison and I must say she doesn’t disappoint!  I found this book very easy to read and get wrapped up in, I didn’t want to put it down.  The characters are well developed and realistic.  The plot and twists are perfectly timed to keep you turning the pages, all 368 of them.  I would definitely read more works by this author and highly recommend Edge of Black. You won’t want to miss this one…

Room 1515

The Book Ends - Reviews Posted on September 26, 2012 by Karen ApplebySeptember 27, 2012

“You can’t just pout and decide you don’t want to play anymore” quote from Point of no Return [the movie]

[amazon_link id=”B0077F9RFK” target=”_blank” container=”” container_class=”” ]Room 1515[/amazon_link] by Bill Wetterman

Book Description:  International Thriller.  A female agent named Peacock is sent on a mission to woo and win the heart of the world’s most powerful powerbroker.  Her job is to learn his secrets and foil his plans. Instead, she falls in love.  A story of the balance of world financial power, betrayal, and romance.  Pour two ounces of the most powerful financier in the world.  Mix in two ounces of America’s most treacherous female spy.  Stir in betrayal and love. Room 1515!

My take:

Power, greed, violence, international intrigue all fit into Room 1515.  I found Room 1515 to be a very well written CIA, financial takeover, espionage type novel.  In some ways it reminds me of the movie “Point of no Return” staring Bridget Fonda back in the 90’s, as well as La Femme Nakita.

Peacock takes her job very seriously.  She moves up the ranks in the CIA to become the “top notch” female spy.  Start reading this one early or you’ll find yourself up at the wee hours until you’ve reached that very last page.

I received this book free from the author and was asked to give my honest opinion.  I did enjoy reading Room 1515 and would read other books by Bill Wetterman.
